Paid Care COVID Impact: 2019 - 2022

The Senate Reconciliation bill, legislation to reduce spending, includes a provision that would prohibit federal student loans for undergraduate degree programs where students earn less than the median high school graduate in the same state.

Nationally, the median wage for high school graduates is $39,428. The median wage for child care workers is $32,050. In all states except DC and NM, median wages for child care workers are less than the median wage for high school graduates. This povision could result in fewer colleges offering Early Education programs. And, even if ECE programs continue, participating students would not be eligible for federal student loans to pursue ECE coursework.
